Identifying Students NOT On Track

ODE requires all districts and schools to adopt policies and procedures for annually assessing the reading skills of each student in grades K-3. These diagnostic assessments for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee must be administered by September 30.

Columbus City Schools uses the KRA-R (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment - Revised, Language and Literacy Component) for Kindergarten, and the i-Ready Reading assessment for grades 1, 2, and 3. The results of these reading diagnostic tests determine whether a child is considered on-track or not on-track in reading.

If a student enrolls in your building after September 30, he/she must be administered a reading diagnostic assessment within 30 days, if one was not already administered at their previous school.  You should see if you can locate the diagnostic score from the previous school before testing the student.

OST Compliance -

  • In addition to meeting the 3GRG On-Track scores for the reading diagnostic assessment, grade 3 students must also score 700 or above overall and 50 or above on the reading subscore of the fall OST ELA assessment to retain their on-track status.

  • Students not meeting these requirements will be placed on a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan for the rest of the school year.

  • The State Board of Education has voted to set the promotion score of the grade 3 Ohio’s State Test in English Language Arts at 690 for the 2023-2024 school year. Any student who scores 690 or higher on the English language arts scaled score will be eligible for promotion at the end of the year.

In addition, the Ohio Department of Education has set the reading subscore alternative promotion score for the grade 3 English language arts test at 48 for the 2023-2024 school year. Any student who scores 48 or higher on the reading subscore will be eligible for promotion at the end of the year, even if the student scores below 690 on the English language arts test.
