Deduction Start Date
Benefit deductions are paid in advance of coverage. A new employee will begin to see biweekly deductions on their paycheck prior to their benefits start date. For example, an employee who is hired in August, at the beginning of the school year, will have a benefits start date of October 1st (1st of the month following 30 days of employment). October’s coverage deductions begins in September.
21 vs. 26 pay employees - The Benefit Deduction schedule is based on the type of pay schedule that an employee is on. 21 pay employees have a more aggressive pay schedule and pay more, faster than 26 pay employees.
New Hires - New Hires do not pay for the time that they’ve missed based on their start date. For example. If an employee is hired January 23rd, their benefits begin on March 1st which means that their deductions begin in January or February (depending on being 21 or 26 pay). We will not take the back deductions for the paychecks that were missed but will start their deductions on the first available paycheck.
Qualifying Life Event - Employees who have a life event, the birth of a child, or marriage, will pay for missing premiums. For example, a 26 pay employee get’s married on September 1st and reports the event on September 23rd. The spouse’s coverage is backdated to September 1st; September coverage was paid for on the first paycheck in August. The employee has missed 6 premiums and owes $1,350.36.
Employee’s Old Plan | Employee’s New Plan | Plan Difference | Total Amount Due |
---|---|---|---|
EE Only - $49.11 | EE + Spouse (30%) - $274.17 | $225.06 | $225.06 x 6 = $1,350.36 |
We will split the difference owed over multiple paychecks to ensure that there is not extreme hardship to cover the balance owed.
Status Changes - If an employee has been promoted from a non benefits eligible position to a benefits eligible position, their deduction start date will be treated as a new hire, where the deductions will begin on the first available check with no back deductions being taken.
