Scheduling Rules

The Scheduling Wizard approaches the fulfillment of student course requests in a very systematic manner. In most situations, it is important to help the Wizard understand the relationship between courses as they are created and defined. This is done using the scheduling rules.

Scheduling rules tie courses together in a variety of ways, affecting the flexibility of the Schedule Wizard. The rule only takes effect if a student has requested both courses during the same scheduling year. When a rule is applied to a course, its complement is applied to the course’s pair. Rules should only be used if absolutely necessary to achieve the education goals of the district.

This link shows all of the available rules and examples of how to use them:

Beginning in 2020-2021, courses worth 1.0 HS credit that meet for the entire school year have been broken into two components. Each of these components meet one semester and are worth 0.5 credits.

For example:

Old Course

New Courses

Old Course

New Courses

911000 - BIOLOGY

911000.1 - BIOLOGY (X)

911000.2 - BIOLOGY (Y)

1.0 credits; year-long

0.5 credits; semester long

0.5 credits; semester long

In order to ensure that these courses are in the same period so that students have continuity across the semester break, we need to set up a scheduling rule. In this case, we are going to use the rule called Same Period.

As shown in the animation above (no sound):

  • Select the course to add the rule to

  • Go to the Course Rules Tab

  • Click New Scheduling Rule

  • Verify the selected course appears under “Course 1”

  • Select Same Period from the drop list.

  • Select the corresponding course in the list for Course 2

    • TIP: you can begin typing the course number to shorten the number of courses in the list

    • CAUTION: make sure to select the correct corresponding course - there might be courses with a similar course number (like the Special Ed or ESL version) in this list

  • Verify that Course 1 and Course 2 are correct in your Rules List at the top

  • Click the Save icon when finished.
