Service Credit
General Guidelines
- Teachers hired prior to 7/1/2000 were eligible to receive up to 5 years of credit for public school experience outside of Columbus City Schools (CCS). Teachers hired on or after 7/1/2000 are eligible to receive up to 10 years of credit for public school experience outside of CCS
- Public school experience is considered to be experience in any public school, teaching experience in accredited armed forces and U.S. State Department DependencySchools, and teaching experience i the Peace Corps and VISTA
- A year of service is considered to be 120 days working at least 7 hours per day
- Physical therapist, school social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and speech therapists may receive credit for private employment or self employment if they were employed full-time for at least 8 months in a 12 month period.
Substitute Teaching
- Teachers do receive credit for time they worked as a substitute in another school district. However, if the time was worked outside of Ohio, they will only receive credit for the time if it was worked at a public school. If the time was worked within Ohio, it may be from either a public or a private school.
- They must have worked 120 days during the school year in order to receive a year of service credit.
- Time subbed during a year may be combined with time serving as a full time teacher. For example, if the employee subbed the first 3 months of the year, and worked 45 days, then was hired as a full time teacher, and worked 90 days for the remainder of the year. Since the 45 days subbing plus the 90 days each equal out to be more than 120 days, the employee will receive 1 year of service credit for salary purposes.
Tutoring
- 600 hours worked as a tutor equals to 1 year of service as a teacher for salary purposes
- Up to 5 years of tutoring experience may be added together to reach the 600 hours in order to count for 1 year of service as a teacher.
