Objective: This guide outlines indicators that might mean you have been infected by a virus that is compromising your system performance and productivity. They can also be a sign that the computer is in need of maintenance.
If you see the errors listed below or something feels off use the Sophos anti-virus program on your computer to scan the system for viruses. Instructions on doing so can be found [HERE].
If you find a virus or the behavior continues for more than a day, call in to the helpdesk at 8425 to request a technician examine your computer for viruses or problems.
Here are a few primary indicators that your computer might be infected: • Your computer runs much slower than normal; trust your judgment you know your computer best.• Your computer stops responding or locks up often when you are in the middle of working.• Your computer crashes and restarts every few minutes.• Your computer restarts on its own and then fails to run normally.• Applications on your computer don't work correctly or appear to run in a different way than you are used to.• Disks or disk drives are inaccessible with no explanation.• You can't print correctly or your documents come out corrupted / distorted.• You see unusual error messages or error messages that come up continuously asking you to install a program or insert a specific software disc.• You see distorted menus and dialog boxes that appear similar to but different than what you normally see especially user name and password entry screens.
