Basic Hardware Troubleshooting


Objective: This process outlines the procedure for basic hardware troubleshooting.
No Power

  1. Check power cable at both ends, make sure they are secure.
    1. If plugged into a power strip make sure it is turned on.


No Display – desktop, or thin client

  1. Check video cable either VGA or DVI at the monitor side and computer side, make sure they are secure.
  2. Check power cord to the monitor at both ends, make sure they are secure.
  3. Make sure PC is not hibernating.


No Network Connection

  1. Check network cable at both ends, make sure they are secure.
  2. Check for lights at computer side where network cable is plugged in.
  3. If plugged into a switch check for lights at the port it is plugged into.
  4. If plugged into a wall drop trouble shoot that the drop is active.
    1. See if another computer connected to the same port works fine.
    2. Try another port, or another drop to rule it out.
  5. If wireless check for wireless toggle switch on side of laptop.


Boot Errors
The following errors are caused when a provisioned machine is not booting to the network. First follow the above Network Connection questions. You can then try rebooting the computer and having the user hit F12 rapidly during boot up to force a network boot. If that does not work and the problem is for one pc out of two or more send out a Field Tech

  1. Non-system disk or disk error
  2. No boot device detected
  3. Press F1 to continue or F2 for setup
