When scheduling elementary school students in CCS, there are certain norms that are followed for all of our buildings. In order to make scheduling for ES students more efficient, when scheduling a new elementary student, we assign them to a team.  Students in elementary schools will typically travel to lunch, art, music, and gym as a group, and spend the rest of the day in academic classes with the same teacher.  Therefore, we can create a team of teachers to assign to that group of students.

Teams are labeled using the section number of the primary teacher, the primary teachers name, and the room number. For example, 10-Johnson-01 would mean the team is for section 10, Ms. Johnson’s Class, and the room number is 1.

When a new student needs a schedule at an elementary school, users can select a Team in the Walk-In Scheduler tool and all of the courses that the student would need to be assigned to would populate. This eliminates the need to search for each individual course to add to the student’s schedule.

Courses assigned to an Elementary School Student

Because we only take attendance on elementary school students once a day, a course called Elementary Attendance is placed on all of the student schedules. This course encompasses their whole attendance day. H1 - H7 (the H stand for hour).

When we started with Infinite Campus, we had a single period for attendance taking that spanned the entire day (9am-3:30pm).  We found that when students came in late and leave early, IC wasn’t automatically calculating the minutes present in school when this happened multiple times in the same period. To correct this, we broke the attendance period down into smaller components of an hour or so.This allows us to account for any time a student may arrive late or leave early during the school day.

The rest of the periods are not marked for attendance. Instead, the remaining periods are for each subject area that an elementary school student could receive instruction in. If the student does not require instruction for that particular subject, we use blocker courses to fill in that period so that the students all have a full schedule. For instance, students in grades KDG through 3rd grade are not eligible to take the Instrumental Music or Chorus courses. Therefore, we use a blocker course for all of those students.
