Subject: DeVry-Global Students

All:

The attached proposal has been approved by David and Maria. Michael and Lisa will work together to contact families.  Thanks for your help thinking this through.

Ed

Each year, the school district has a number of students leave Global Academy and attend DeVry Advantage Academy as full-time students.  As they leave Global, they are assigned back to their home school and are spread around the district.  However, these students rarely return to their home school for sports, activities, or other social activities that are important to high school students.  Communications are fractured between schools and students because these students never attended their home school.  Some schools provide decent communications while others do not.

Proposal:  The district would provide an opportunity for all Global to Devry Advantage Academy students to apply for an Adjustment Transfer to Mifflin High School.  Global will provide a single point of contact (Lisa Hoenshell) to serve as a liaison between Mifflin and the students.  This will allow the school to provide important information to students that rarely, if ever, walk through the doors while providing the district with a better way to track these students to ensure program success.  This would also provide DeVry Advantage Academy students with a small social network to be part of if they want to attend home school events.

Process:  Lisa Hoenshell will contact families and provide them with the Adjustment Transfer paperwork.  Paperwork should be turned into the Executive Director by August 11. 2016.  Lisa will explain any impact this decision would have on Athletic Eligibility (although none of these students currently plays a sport).  The Executive Director will work with Central Enrollment to finalize the transfer.

Notes:

  • Vincent Clarno, Michael Sain, Tonya Freeman, Kim Normand, and Lisa Hoenshell are aware of this proposal.  No one has raised issues of concern.  Since students attend Devry full-time, they will not impact Mifflin numbers or FTE needs.
  • Lisa would also assist them with their senior responsibilities, college search and VCAP classes.  VCAP could occur at either Mifflin or Global.  These students all need VCAP to pick up a few credits that are not offered at Devry.
  • There are currently 6 students that could apply for this transfer.  There may be a few more depending on acceptance of new students for fall.

Just one point to clarify.  Once a family accepts the transfer, Mifflin will become their home school.  If they leave the DeVry program, they would attend Mifflin.
