Changes for 15-16

About this page

This page highlights the planned changes for the next school year.

Course Blockers

  • There are to be no gaps in student schedules.

  • Every period is to be filled with a course or a course blocker accurately reflecting a student's true schedule.

  • Course blockers are non-graded course titles that are to be used to fill gaps in students' schedules in Infinite Campus.

  • To find a list of District course blockers, proceed as follows:

    • Go to the "Search" tab
    • Select "Course Master"
    • Select "Advanced Search"
    • Type "N%" in the "Course #" field
  • There are three pages of course blocker options.
  • To have a course blocker add to the school deck, send a email request to Jason Vance.

Career Center Scheduling

  • LUNCH:  Home schools must schedule lunch at the home high school for students who attend Fort Hayes Career Center in the morning.

  • This change is being made because of time, space and instructional limitation.  As advised by the state, Fort Hayes can no longer lessen instruction time to provide a lunch period for students before going to their home high schools.

Course Numbering

  • The biggest change to the scheduling process is the new course numbering system.
  • In an effort to streamline courses and increase the accuracy of course selections for students, the course numbering system has be redesigned.
  • The new numbering system includes numbers and letter prefixes and suffixes which indicate aspects that are unique for the course for state and district reporting processes as well as credit values and scheduling information.  For example, ending numbers may represent the credit value/time in class.
  • For specific examples and details, see the Course Numbers *** section of this notebook.

Unified Arts and Electives

General Changes

  • Name Change:  All art, music, technology, world language, and physical education courses grades PK-8 will be referred to as Unified Arts.  (instead of "Encore" in grades 6-8).  High school credit bearing art, music, technology, world language, and physical education courses will continue to be referred to as Electives.
  • From Year-Long to Semesters:  In response to requests from building administrators, high school elective credit bearing courses, with the exception of performing arts and world language courses, will be offered as semester courses. This allows for more flexible scheduling.
    • These courses, now a semester long and worth .5 credit, can be taken as stand alone courses.  They are not repeatable but, the order in which they are taken does not matter.
    • The curriculum department is looking at current year long curriculum and planning to divide course content into semesters.  The plan is to keep the current title of the course and add detail as to the standards taught within the given semester.  For example:  Theater Survey may become Theater Survey:  Intro to Theatre History (semester), and Theater Survey:  Intro to Theater Arts (semester).
    • Currently, these courses courses have been renamed as "BLUE" and "WHITE" for now to differentiate them, rather than an X/Y, until the official titles are developed.
    • Master schedulers and counselors should still plan to schedule electives as year long courses using both semester courses where possible.  This will increase ease of scheduling and tracking graduation requirements.
  • Performance Based Electives:  Performance based electives will be year long.  Special permission will be required by curriculum to offer performance based courses as semester classes.  A course request form must be submitted for this approval.
  • MARCHING CONCERT BAND will be renamed MARCHING/CONCERT BAND to indicate that students in this year long course participate in both Marching Band and concert band activities throughout the school year.
